About me

Hi, I’m Matthew. I’m the founder and director of the REMIX Lab. I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Université Laval and Researcher at the VITAM Research Centre for Sustainable Health.

My research aims to improve the delivery and organization of mental health services so that these services are more accessible, person-centred, integrated and recovery-oriented.

Prior to joining the Faculty of Medicine at Université Laval, I completed postdoctoral studies under the mentorship of Dr. France Légaré, the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Shared Decision Making and Knowledge Translation. From 2017 to 2019, I was also a CIHR Health System Impact Fellow mentored by Dr. Légaré and Dr. Denis Roy from INESSS (Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux). My postdoctoral work focused on how to improve the involvement of service users and their families in integrated models of mental health care in primary care. I also helped advance understanding of learning health systems and how this concept could be applied in the Canadian healthcare system. I received my PhD from Université de Montréal in 2014 working under the mentorship of Dr. Louise Fournier, CIHR-PHAC Applied Research Chair in Population Mental Health. My doctoral research focused on how to improve the quality of depression care in primary care. I also have a Master’s degree in Community Health (Université Laval) and an honours undergraduate degree in Psychology (McGill University).

Other roles I currently hold :

  • Codirector of the Primary Care Practice-Based Research Network affiliated with Université Laval

  • Scientific Leader of the Réseau de collaboration sur les pratiques interprofessionnelles en santé et en services sociaux (RCPI), a provincial centre for expertise in interprofessional collaboration.

  • Mentor, Transdisciplinary Understanding and Training on Research – Primary Health Care (TUTOR-PHC) program for primary care research leaders.

I have been fortunate to have been recognized with several honours and awards, including a FRQS Junior 1 Salary Award, CIHR Health System Impact Fellowship, and Frederick Banting & Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral Award, among others.

I am a proud husband to my wife Dr. Amélie Achim (Université Laval) and father of two amazing children. I love nature, traveling and being active in sports.
