Why?
Common mental disorders such as depression, anxiety and burnout are widespread and often treated in primary care. These disorders often have an impact on people's ability to work, and are one of the main causes of sick leave. Family doctors are the main prescribers of sick leave, and play an essential role in managing their patients' mental health problems, and in deciding when and under what conditions they should return to work. However, family doctors are poorly trained in work-related issues, and their practices with regard to mental health and occupational health can vary considerably. The provision of evidence-based tools for the management of mental health-related sick leave could help family doctors provide their patients with more person-centred and team-based care, and promote their recovery and ability to return to work.
