COVID - CARE EXPERIENCES

Why ?

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused numerous disruptions within the healthcare system, as well as significant transformations in how healthcare services are delivered and organized. It is essential to understand how these disruptions and transformations have been experienced by service users.

This is especially true for people living with coexisting mental health conditions and chronic physical illnesses (or mental and physical multimorbidity). Because of their multiple health needs, these individuals often require care that is prompt, continuous, and delivered by a team.

Methods

Phase 1 : A descriptive qualitative study including interviews with adults with physical and mental multimorbidity (N = 30) and with health professionals (N = 15).

Phase 2 : A pathway mapping study in which we will develop visual representations of participants’ interactions with the health system and the critical moments and factors that shaped their care experiences.

Phase 3 : A cross-sectional survey examining the care experiences of people with mental health problems and/or chronic physical illnesses who participated in the MAVIPAN study (link to MAVIPAN).

Phase 4 : A series of deliberative dialogues with key partners to share the results of the study and discuss strategies for improving care for people with physical and mental multimorbidity.

Goals

Exploring the perspectives of individuals with multimorbid physical and mental health conditions on the impact of the pandemic on their healthcare experiences.
To study the perspective of primary care providers and others on the impact of the pandemic on the care provided to people with multimorbid physical and mental conditions.
To map the care pathways of people with multimorbid physical and mental conditions and to identify critical moments and factors that most influenced their experiences.
Identify strategies to improve care provided to people with physical and mental multimorbidity.
